  • 18xx map and tile generator

I’ve been thinking about doing a new 18xx map and tile generator to assist in playing PBEM games. There are currently two good solutions I know of, but both have flaws. Rails Rails is a popular and easy to use program, that handles everything: map, tiles, shares, money. Rails also knows the rules and can…

  • Harzbahn 1873 summary

I studied the rules of 1873 Harzbahn. Here’s a summary I created. It’s based on the July 5th 2011 version of the rules available at the Geek. Start Auction Round first bid for first purchase right high bidder goes first, rest in the reverse order of passing high bid is Start Premium first bidder must…

  • Stone Age, Moto Grand Prix

Last Wednesday was another successful afternoon of games, with plenty of people playing games. I started with Jälkipeli, since I had learnt that I had got one small but critical rule wrong. This ruined the game, particularly with three players. Too bad I had already written a review of the game based on the wrong…

  • South African Railroads, Skat

I’ve missed two previous Wednesdays (the whole days, simply gone, no sight of them), so I was very glad to be able to attend this week. Vacation hit this week, and lots of people were already playing by noon and we had eight people playing at the same time, which is unusually good. When I…

  • Leaders of Cornucopia

Last Wednesday saw the first tests of two hot new expansions, Dominion: Cornucopia and 7 Wonders: Leaders. We played two games of Dominion, both with lots of Cornucopia cards. These seem fine to me. Tournament is apparently one of the strongest cards in the set and one of the strongest cards in the whole game,…

  • Airlines Europe, more Agricola

Yesterday I played three games of Airlines Europe, with two, three and four players — that’s pretty good considering I’m going to review the game. Rarely I get such a spread of player counts (Black Friday, three times with five players every time, for example). It’s seven years since I last played Union Pacific, so comparisons…

  • Expansions: Finca and Agricola

Yesterday’s games were about expansions to familiar games. First up was a two-player game of Finca with the El Razul expansion. It’s a bunch of elements that make small changes in the game: Wildcard tile on windmill gives you any fruit you want. Makes things easier and the game a bit faster, perhaps. El Razul…

  • Bohnanza and Rattus

Yesterday we were supposed to play Cavum, which I’ve had for quite a while now, but that plan failed: there were five of us. The curse of a small game group… I don’t mind a smaller group, as it makes it more likely that you get to play the same games again with same people,…

Rating scale

Here’s the rating scale I use, and how it corresponds to BGG ratings:

  • Enthusiastic: I love the game and want to play it. (9, 10)
  • Suggest: Good game, I want to play it and will usually suggest it. (7, 8)
  • Indifferent: I’ll play the game, if necessary, but won’t suggest it. (5, 6)
  • Avoid: I don’t want to play this game. (1-4)

Of green

The green colour of the sidebar is the Brunswick Green used by Nationalised British Railways – Western Region:

“A different color, also called “Brunswick green”, was the colour for passenger locomotives of the Grouping and then the nationalized British Railways. There were three shades of these colours and they are defined under British Standard BS381C – 225, BS381C – 226, and BS381C – 227 (ordered from lightest to darkest). The Brunswick Green used by the Nationalised British Railways – Western Region for passenger Locomotives was BS381C – 227 (rgb(30:62:46)). RAL6005 is a close substitute to BS381C – 227. A characteristic of these colours was the ease for various railway locations to mix them by using whole pots of primary colours – hence the ability to get reasonably consistent colours with manual mixing half a century and more ago.”

There is a difference from play with dice, because the latter is open, whereas play with cards takes place from ambush, because they are concealed.
